I read with fascination your story, Steve. Other than seeing the movie, "The Year of Living Dangerously," I did not not much about Indonesia until I met my boyfriend who is Dutch. His mother and her family are from there. It was formerly called Dutch East Indies. His Oma was a comfort woman for the Japanese during WWII, and his mother, five at the time, was also a prisoner of war. My boyfriend still has their "papers" during that time which were written in Japanese and English. His grandfather who worked for an oil company was murdered. The stories he has told me make Indonesia sound like the wild, wild west, only in this case, the east. I sincerely hope that the Indonesians are able to build their city on Borneo and bring about a well-designed, functional, clean city. It will be interesting to see it unfold.
